UBC Internet of Things (IoT) Wi-Fi

UBC Internet of Things (IoT) wi-fi network gives your personal devices their own private network that is secure, encrypted, and invisible to everyone else on campus. Your laptop, phone, gaming console, smart TV, speaker, and other personal devices will be able to see each other and work together, just like they do at home.  You can also connect devices that are not supported on ubcsecure, eduroam or ubcprivate (such as smart plugs, gaming consoles, set top boxes, displays, etc.) to UBC wi-fi.

Students, faculty and staff can register their devices through a self-service portal and connect them using a personal wi-fi password - there are no shared passwords with other users. Each user's devices are placed in their own private network, keeping them separate from other users while still allowing your own devices to see and communicate with each other.

UBC Internet of Things wi-fi network is available across UBC Vancouver, UBC Okanagan, and remote sites where the UBC wi-fi network is available.

  • A separate network connection to register your device at the UBC IoT Portal (ie. ubcsecure, a wired connection, or your home internet)
  • You will need the wireless MAC address of each device you want to register.
  • MAC randomization must be disabled. This option may be known as ‘Private wi-fi address’, ‘Random hardware address’ or ‘Randomized MAC’ depending on the operating system.
  • Up to 30 devices can be registered per user.

Learn More

  • You can generate a new personal wi-fi password at any time from the portal. After changing your wi-fi password, your devices will need to be updated with the new key to reconnect.
