1. Who is eligible for MATLAB?

MATLAB is available for UBC owned machines used by faculty and staff members as well as personally owned machines for students.

2. How much does MATLAB cost?

MATLAB is licensed centrally and is available at no charge for all students, faculty, staff and researchers for non-commercial Teaching and Research purposes related to UBC.

3. Is there a limit to Standalone licenses?

There is no limit to the number of standalone licenses for UBC owned devices. However, these licenses are limited to one year and require an annual software renewal.

4. Why would I want a standalone license vs. a network license on a UBC owned device?

A network license is the preferred installation, as it does not require an annual license file update. Standalone licenses are the best solution if you do not always have access to the internet or to the UBC network. However, standalone licenses require an annual update.

5. It says that MATLAB is expiring, how do I renew my software license?

UBC owned devices with a network license will be updated automatically when the license is renewed, and no action is required. For UBC owned devices with a standalone license, or personal devices, follow the instructions here to renew the license.

6. What is included in MATLAB?

UBC IT’s current version of MATLAB features over 100 toolboxes for general use in the base license. You can view a complete list of the toolboxes available on the MATLAB Software Licensing page. If there is a toolbox that you would like to add to MATLAB that is not included in the list, please contact UBC IT Software Licensing to find out how to purchase additional toolboxes.

7. Is there an additional cost for adding worker licenses for clusters?

There are 32 workers per cluster permitted at no additional cost, with no limit on the number of clusters. If more licenses are needed, please let UBC IT Software Licensing know the requirement, and we can look into the price.

8. I am a student, can I install MATLAB?

Yes, for instructions on how to obtain MATLAB, please visit our Software Licensing page.
