myLogs Central Log Management

The myLogs service is a comprehensive log management and analytics solution designed to streamline and enhance the handling of system, service, and application logs. It assists teams in complying with key portions of UBC Information Security Standard M8 – Logging and Monitoring of UBC Systems.

Features and Benefits

FeatureBenefits
Centralized CollectionProvides a unified platform for the receipt of log data shipped from various sources across UBC’s IT systems, services, and applications.
AggregationAggregates data from disparate systems, services, and applications, parsing it into a coherent format with consistent, indexable fields.  Simplifies the process of identifying patterns and correlation of logs across different components of the IT environment.
Storage & Retention
UBC ISS M8 § 2.3, 4.2
Retains significant quantities of log data with robust and scalable storage. Ensures that logs are preserved immutably in accordance with UBC Information Security Standards, supporting both immediate analysis and long-term archiving, while enabling client systems to significantly reduce their local storage overhead.
QueryingOffers powerful querying capabilities, enabling users to efficiently search and retrieve specific log data. Advanced search features help in quickly pinpointing issues, conducting forensic investigations, and generating insights from log information.
SecurityEliminates the risk of local log tampering or destruction by threat actors during a security incident. Supports a robust permission model, ensuring that logs are logically separated so that teams can only access their own logs and cannot view logs from other teams.
AnalyticsProvides tools for analyzing log data and dashboard creation, helping to detect anomalies, facilitate troubleshooting, identify security incidents, and monitor system performance. Analytics capabilities support proactive IT management and enhance overall cybersecurity posture.

Getting Started

Requests for myLogs onboarding can be submitted through the Cybersecurity Services section of the UBC Self Service Portal.  Once your request is submitted, a Cybersecurity Analyst will add it to a priority-based onboarding queue.

Onboarding requests are evaluated and addressed based on several factors, including system complexity, UBC Electronic Service risk classification and UBC Electronic Information classification (both defined in UBC ISS U1), the security significance and volume of the log data.
