The UBC Learning Technology Hub (LT Hub) team is simplifying and streamlining how learning technology systems at UBC determine what name to display for you. These changes will make it easier for you to ensure your name is displayed properly in systems like Canvas and Webwork and for you to make any corrections if required.
After the change on July 27, 2022, those whose preferred names differ from the legal names the university has recorded may find their names automatically updated to their legal name. Here’s how you can check your preferred name ahead of time to make sure your name displays as you intend, or to adjust how your name is displayed:
Students

If you are a student working for UBC, you can set your preferred first and last name in Workday. Canvas and other learning technology systems will use this name.

If you are a student studying at UBC but not working for UBC, you can set your preferred first name in the Student Service Centre. *Canvas and other learning technology systems will use this first name.

If you are no longer an active UBC student or student employee but are using UBC’s learning technology systems, you can set your display name on CWL myAccount . Canvas and other learning technology systems will use this name.
Faculty/staff

If you are a faculty or staff member working for UBC, you can set your preferred first and last name in Workday. Canvas and other learning technology systems will use this name.

If you are no longer an active UBC employee but are using UBC’s learning technology systems, you can set your display name on CWL myAccount. Canvas and other learning technology systems will use this name.
Once you have made a change to one of the above systems, it may take a day for the name change to be processed in Canvas and other learning technology systems. If you have made a change and are not seeing it reflected by the next day—or if the name change is urgent—contact the LT Hub at LT.hub@ubc.ca. We know names are important and personal.
