Select legacy email protocols to be disabled on September 22, 2021

September 3, 2021

In order to strengthen the security of UBC email services, the IMAPS and POPS email protocols will be disabled on September 22, 2021. This change will be implemented for all new FASmail users, as well as users who have not used these services since March 2021.

IMAPS and POPS are legacy email protocols frequently used by bad actors as they are less secure and not compatible with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Individuals who currently use these legacy protocols will retain access following September 22, and should not notice any impact. In addition, application and Generic mailboxes will not be affected by this change.

Access to one of these protocols can still be obtained by submitting a ticket to the IT Service Centre. Proper validation of the user's identity will be required before the request is approved.

You are invited to come and join a discussion about this change as part of the Privacy Matters @ UBC Focus On: Workshop Series for September.

When: Wednesday, September 15, 2021 | 2:00pm - 3:00pm

How: Streamed online over Zoom
