Encryption prevents others from intercepting your private information such as usernames, passwords, and email messages. myVPN encrypts your data using SSL tunnels and provides secure UBC online resources. myVPN also allows you to access some UBC services from off-campus, including library journals and the Management Systems Portal. One of the benefits of SSL based VPN is that you will be able to access UBC resources through many restrictive firewalls.
We recommend that you use VPN when connecting to the UBC network from off-campus and when using non-secure wireless networks. Note that although the myVPN service provides a secure communications channel between your computer and the campus network, any data that leaves the VPN server is insecure from the campus network to its final destination (unless you are using other layers of security like a secure website).
Who Can Use This
To use the myVPN service, you must have a Campus-Wide Login account and you must belong to at least one of the following affiliations:
- Active UBC Staff and Faculty
- Actively enrolled UBC Students
- UBC Guests with an active CWL sponsorship
- UBC Emeriti
Technical Requirements
Before you can access myVPN, you must obtain a CWL account. CWL accounts are available to registered UBC students, staff and faculty. If none of these affiliations reflect your status with the university and you need VPN access, you can still obtain a CWL guest account if you are sponsored by a staff member or faculty.
Once you have your CWL account, you can configure your computer for the appropriate VPN service. Check the myVPN Setup Documents page for help. There are specific technical requirements depending on your operating system.
Pricing
myVPN access is free for UBC staff, faculty, students, and guest CWL accounts.
