The EduCloud transition is driven by significant changes in the VMware ecosystem following Broadcom's acquisition, requiring us to adopt modern, cost-effective cloud solutions.

The Drivers of Change

Licensing and Pricing

Broadcom has shifted VMware's licensing model from perpetual to subscription and pricing from sockets to cores. UBC's licensing costs are expected to increase by up to threefold, rising from $800,000 annually to $2.4 million annually.

Product Elimination

Several products critical to EduCloud are being discontinued, including VMware Cloud Director. This product provides the self-service interface for consumers and serves as the orchestration engine for automating many functions within EduCloud.

ELA Expiry 

UBC's Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) with VMware is set to conclude in July 2026. Due to Broadcom's subscription-based licensing model, the software must no longer be used after the subscription period ends.

We're implementing a comprehensive, phased approach to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption to your services.

Move 40% of workloads to public cloud initially, followed by 60% to OpenStack on-premises private cloud by July 2026.
