UBC IT has released its Critical Incident Review (CIR) on the EduCloud outage incident that occurred on May 15, 2018. The unexpected outage was one of the largest experienced by UBC, impacting a number of campus-wide services including our wireless network, Faculty and Staff Email, Finance and HR systems, the student information system, and Canvas.

Given the nature of this outage, multiple stakeholders beyond UBC IT were involved in the CIR. For this reason, UBC IT has released this particular CIR to the campus community. View the PDF document (500KB).

Please note the following:

  • The CIR is part of UBC IT’s incident management process and address the technical root cause of the incident, lessons learned, and mitigation for the technical teams and service owners involved.
  • The time frame of this CIR is May 15 – June 8, 2018. A number of recommendations and actions are already underway with campus stakeholders.
  • A technical information session for campus-wide system administrators was held on Monday, June 11 (in-person and live webcast). This provided an opportunity to answer any questions and to provide an update by the UBC IT Systems team.
