Overview

UBC Workspace’s current software, Horizon Files, is reaching end of life support. UBC IT is upgrading the service to UBC Workspace 2.0 with its replacement software, Secure Content Locker, starting with a pilot launch in April 2015.

Purpose

Hosted on-campus, UBC Workspace is a cloud-based file sharing service that offers an easy and secure way for staff and faculty to share files via folders, both internally and externally with colleagues, partners and clients, from any supported device, while still complying with Canadian, provincial, and UBC security requirements.

UBC Workspace's current software, Horizon Files, is reaching end of life in May 2015 and is being replaced by Airwatch by VMware's Secure Content Locker (Workspace 2.0). UBC IT is taking this opportunity to test the new features for this service in a pilot environment with existing Workspace users to ensure the service is ready for a campus-wide implementation.

Workspace 2.0 Features

  • Like Workspace 1.0, protects your sensitive content in a corporate container and provides you with a central application to securely access, store, update and distribute the latest documents from your mobile devices. Available for Android, Apple, Mac and Windows devices.
  • A more stable file sharing platform than its predecessor.
  • Additional security features, such as ability to password protect shared files and folders, and "viewing only" (without download) option.

Goals

  • Replace current service offering, Horizon Files, with Secure Content Locker (Workspace 2.0) to provide a hosted on-campus, cloud-based service that offers secure file sharing  capability and synchronization
  • Migrate all users and files from Horizon Files to Secure Content Locker (Workspace 2.0) seamlessly

Timeline

  • April - May 2015
    • Pilot Program
      • Test migration tool with pilot group
  • June 2015
    • Launch and user migration
      • Migrate current Workspace users to Workspace 2.0
  • July 2015
    • Extend Service to all users
