Software Available at no cost for UBC Staff and Faculty

The following software is now available to install at no cost on a UBC owned device:

Adobe Acrobat

Collection of 20+ Adobe apps including Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and InDesign

Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (ADT4T)
Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (ADT4T) puts professional developer tools, software, and services from Microsoft in the hands of faculty and IT Support Staff, with plans that come as a part of various Academic Volume Licensing Agreements.

Camtasia
Camtasia is a powerful screencasting desktop software that also supports video editing.

iClicker
Clickers are wireless handheld devices that allow students to respond individually to in-class polls and quizzes, sending instant responses from the whole class to the instructor's computer.

Maple
A powerful mathematical problem solving and visualization system used worldwide in education, research, and industry.

MATLAB
MATLAB is a language for technical computing that combines numeric computation, advanced graphics and visualization, and a high-level programming language.

Microsoft
Microsoft Select Agreement allows UBC departments to purchase Microsoft Products at a very competitive price through UBC IT. As Microsoft has hundreds of products available and we only provide the most commonly used applications.

NVivo
The software enables users to collect, organize, and analyze content from interviews, focus groups, discussions, surveys, audio, social media, videos and webpages.

Respondus StudyMate
Respondus StudyMate is a desktop software instructors can download and use to create simple, animation-based activities and games using custom course content.

Respondus Quiz
Respondus Quiz is an assessment software for quickly creating and managing exams or quizzes that can either be printed and distributed as paper copies or imported to a Canvas course.

SnagIT
Snagit is a screen-capture desktop software that allows instructors to easily capture, modify, markup, and share screenshots and basic video captures of their computer screens.

SOLIDWORKS
SOLIDWORKS is a 3D CAD Design and analysis software, and a solid modeler that utilizes a parametric feature based approach to create models and assemblies.

SPSS
An advanced statistical package for the Social Sciences

SAS
Software for business intelligence, business analytics, data warehousing, and data mining to gather, manage, and analyze large amounts of information

Tableau
A modern, easy-to-use data analysis and reporting tool that allows effective data visualization from departmental data sets.
Note: Tableau is available free to faculty only.

VideoScribe
VideoScribe is an animation software that allows instructors to create animation videos on a virtual whiteboard.

  1. Who is eligible for the free software?
    The software listed above (excluding Tableau) is available for university staff and faculty on a UBC-owned device.
  2. Is there any account migration involved?
    No, you can continue to use your software as usual.
  3. Can I install this software on a personal computer?
    Camtasia and Snag-It are licensed for all faculty, staff and students and can be installed on personal devices. All other packages except SPSS are only available for installation on UBC-owned devices that are used for university academic, non-commercial research and administrative purposes. SPSS can be installed on UBC-owned devices for academic or non-commercial research purposes only, and cannot be used for university administrative purposes.
  4. How do I install the software on my UBC-owned device?
    Contact your local IT support team or submit a request to site-license@it.ubc.ca. Okanagan campus staff and faculty should contact the UBC Okanagan IT Services Help Desk.
